first impressions
VISUAL
Lan Wangji stands 6' 2" or 188cm. He holds himself with grace, is sure- and quiet-footed, and always employs a high level of hygiene. He generally wears white, light blue, or other very light colors. He prefers simple elegance, with understated details, and cloud motif.
AURAL
He has a somewhat deep voice, smooth, and speaks with an even pace and never in a rush.
OLFACTORY
According to canon, he smells of sandalwood. He actually has a perfume sold as merchandise with the notes of cedarwood, juniper, and sandalwood. It smells kind of like a polished wooden surface as opposed to a dry wood shaving that a lot of woody perfumes tend to have, and isn't incense-y like many sandalwoods tend to be. It's a very dad-like cologne.
DEMEANOR
Calm and poised, Lan Wangji communicates mostly in microexpressions. When not doing so, he usually appears dour or dissatisfied.
SPIRITUAL
Lan Wangji has a good amount of spiritual energy for his canon! He does end up being chief cultivator, after all. He doesn't attempt to hide it, so feel free to notice it on his person if your character can detect energy.
opt-in/out
SILENCING SPELL
Lan Wangji uses the silencing spell which renders the user unable to speak for ~5 minutes, and if they open their mouth to break the spell, it causes physical damage. I would never actually use this without asking, but if you'd like to opt into having this used without explicit permission every time, let me know.
SPIRITUAL
Lan Wangji has the ability to speak to the deceased/ghosts via using his instrument. If you play a ghost or dead person and would like to play with this ability, please just let me know and I'll work something out!
OPT-OUT
Finally, if you would like to opt out of interacting with Lan Wangji, please let me know also and I'll try my best to avoid tagging you in the future!

Character: Wangji Lan
Canon: The Untamed
Canon point: Post-Canon
OU or AU?: AU
Age: Mid-30s
Species: Human
AU clarification: He has been in a previous jamjar with mystery elements where his primary goal was to fight creepy creatures and try and get home. His development has mainly been in creating relationships with people from other universes, and a separate version of his universe. He has also learned modern technologies, and experienced temporary emotional and physical enhancements from various events.
On his journey to figuring out the inner-workings of his last jamjar, he caught the attention of one of the NPCs who tried to turn his best friend and fiance at the time against him. That NPC threatened his life, and later, helped them escape from a fight. He works under the assumption that most NPCs are cagey and hiding something. He also mourned the deaths and worried over injuries of castmates only to find that they weren't permanent, though he attributes this healing to one of the NPCs and won't assume this is true at Noctium.
His most important development is getting married to his childhood crush and back-from-the-dead soulmate. The relationship started at a mismatched canon point in which they were enemies from a technical standpoint, and has evolved into a very solid relationship. At one point they were able to have a family unit with canon family members and their unofficially-adopted castmate.

Disposition:
- Obedient/Filial.
Lan Wangji spends most of his canon struggling in figuring out whether to obey his clan's copious rules, or to obey what he believes is the right thing to do. Though in the end the latter wins out, he does still do his best to be an exemplary clan member, and reminds people to follow the rules. He places a lot of trust in and feels obligated to his family. When he eventually fights his sect members (explanation in "Loyalty" section), his uncle doles out the punishment and is disappointed as he thinks this is uncharacteristically disobedient of Lan Wangji.- Cold/Aloof.
He is, as his future husband once complained, a "relentless, unreasonable and rigid fuddy-duddy." He remains cool and collected in most circumstances, unshakable. He shows his emotions mainly in microexpressions, and generally gives off a standoffish and unapproachable air. He is known for speaking tersely, and being generally unreadable to any but his older brother.
According to his older brother, he has been withdrawn ever since his mother's death. It should also be noted that he is only ever depicted smiling at his husband and his adopted child.- Dignified/Honorable.
Lan Wangji is the picture of a perfect classical Chinese gentleman. He is scholarly, well-to-do, fights well, and plays the guqin (an ancient instrument). He has an excellent memory and never forgets promises, and is well-known amongst the other characters as being pragmatic and respectable above all else. He is so well-respected that, when he breaks away to support the protagonist (who is seen as a traitor), the other characters quickly accuse the protagonist of having manipulated Lan Wangji, instead of Lan Wangji having betrayed them.
Whenever punished, Lan Wangji refuses to argue for a lesser sentence for himself, and takes on his punishments wordlessly, without complaint, and with his back straight and head high. He does this even if the situation is out of his control, or if he is under extreme mental and physical duress.- Loyal.
On the whole, Lans are a ride-or-die kind of clan. Even though he tried to side with Wei Wuxian shortly before his death, he had regrets afterwards that he didn't do enough. He fought his own clan members and accepted consequential punishment in order to rescue the remaining refugees who were under Wei Wuxian's protection. Towards the end of the canon, Lan Wangji essentially stakes his entire reputation in order to fight alongside the now-resurrected Wei Wuxian. He is loyal foremost to his husband, and then to his brother and his sect. He would give his reputation, his life and his honor for these things.- Passionate.
Underneath the aloof and distant air of Lan Wangji is an extremely passionate and loving man. He often shows his affections through gifts (alcohol, meals, toys) and acts of service (mainly acting as a bodyguard or willingness to bend the rules, but there are several other examples that exist in other adaptations of this canon.) This can sometimes drive him to do illogical things, such as wait outside for his monthly visits with his mother after her death. He also never stops mourning over Wei Wuxian despite not knowing he will be revived, even sixteen years later. Even though we don't see him during this timeskip, the lyrics in his character song suggest that he continually attempts to commune with the dead in order to ask questions of Wei Wuxian's ghost. His passion can also be harmful and destructive: feeling Wei Wuxian's death is his fault, he turns briefly to depression, alcoholism, and self-harm.
Under pressure: Lan Wangji does extremely well under pressure. He sometimes puts on an angry or concentrated face, but very few times does he lose his control over himself. In zero circumstances in canon during battle does he lose his calm. After the Wen clan burn down his home and kill his father, he is essentially kidnapped by them into an indoctrination program. He spends that time mostly acting unbothered, and even marches with everyone else on his broken leg, and later fights, without complaint.
He is often quiet and under-spoken, he doesn't panic and he doesn't mince words.
The times when he does become emotional + break control are when Wei Wuxian is in danger or being threatened.
Condition upon arrival: Perfectly healthy.
Abilities: Cultivation is a system for spiritual guidance, health, martial arts, and in a fictional context, related magic. Its magic is mostly tied to something each user has, called a golden core.
His clan specializes in several special techniques involving an instrument known as a guqin.
- Guqin Abilities
-Inquiry involves communicating with spirits of the deceased.
-Chord Assassination allows the user to turn the sonic resonance of the guqin into blades.
-Vanquish is used in exorcism to quell restless spirits, and
-Rest allows for the calming of energies and spirits.
Not only is he an excellent guqin player, but in the series he composes this song.- Spells His sect is known for their silencing spell, and the other spells that he is shown to be able to make with talismans are mainly related to defense, barriers, soundproofing an area, starting fires, and sending short messages. Spells can be invented by characters in canon, though Lan Wangji does not seem interested in inventing any himself.
- Martial Arts/Swordsmanship He is well-regarded as one of the best fighters of his generation, with a high endurance for pain. He has (like his castmates) a superhuman ability to jump very high and float in the air.
- Spiritual Power Spiritual power, aka qi is responsible for spell work, being able to pull one's sword which is unique to the user, and can be used to heal. Lan Wangji is able to transfer qi via touch. Qi can also be added to a hand-to-hand attack to increase damage.
- Sword Flying For some reason, swords work like broomsticks to witches but you stand on them like a surfboard.
- Intelligence Lan Wangji is extremely well-educated and spends a lot of his time puzzling out mysteries in canon. He is shown to be resourceful and adaptive.
- Calligraphy Lan Wangji has beautiful, impeccable handwriting.
- Cooking This is borrowed canon from the novel, but he's an excellent cook.
Inventory:
- 1 headband, light blue with silver decorations. Marker of the Lan family sect.
- 1 silver headpiece, worn over the topknot, possibly denoting rank.
- 1 white + light blue hanfu
- 1 matching overcoat
- 1 matching waistbelt that includes dangly beads.

- 1 pouch that holds things that are way too big to fit in
- a bunch of paper talismans
- His sword
- His guqin (carried in his pouch hammerspace)

childhood
Lan Wangji was the second-born of Qingheng-Jun and Madam Lan. His mother had killed one of the Lan clan members, and his father married her despite familial protests, and constructed buildings for them to be secluded from the others. Lan Wangji was only allowed to see her once a month. She passed away when he was young, and not understanding why he could no longer see her, he would wait outside her door every month at their designated time, and continued to do so into adulthood.
At the beginning of the story chronologically, Wei Wuxian, Jiang Cheng and Jiang Yanli have come to the Cloud Recesses to be instructed by the Lan family. They've misplaced their invitations, and so they are refused entry. While setting up camp, Lan Wangji lets in Jiang Cheng and Jiang Yanli, though Wei Wuxian has left to retrieve items. Wei Wuxian sneaks in, and Lan Wangji fights him on a rooftop.
After that, Wei Wuxian works tirelessly to try and become Lan Wangji's friend, even though it's perceived by others that Lan Wangji detests him. In fact, Lan Wangji catches Wei Wuxian cheating with another student, Nie Huaisang, and oversees the punishment.
Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng are invited to solve the issue of the Water Ghosts plaguing Caiyi Town. Afterwards, they celebrate with drinking, but is again caught by Lan Wangji. Wei Wuxian casts a spell and forces him to drink, at which point he gets drunk and wakes up late the next morning. Due to his breaking the rules, he accepts the punishment given to the other boys who broke curfew.
After the punishment, Wei Wuxian happens upon Lan Wangji healing in a cold spring, and joins him. They get pulled into a cave, where they are stuck for about three days and listen to some expository information.
the sunshot campaign + battle at nightless city
One day, the Wen clan decide to request family members from each clan come to them for training. It turns out that they're power hungry, and wish to weaken all the other clans. They come to the Cloud Recesses and burn it down entirely. Lan Wangji's father is in critical condition and his brother Xichen is now missing, but he's forced to come attend the training.
During a mission, the Wen trap a bunch of the young clan members in a cave with a monster called the Slaughter Tortoise. The clan members escape, but Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji stay behind to act as bait. The two of them remain trapped in the cave as the others go to get help, and kill the Slaughter Tortoise but are badly injured. Moreover, the Slaughter Tortoise left the hole the others escaped through caved in, so they have no option but to wait for help.
Once the clan members report back, there's a campaign against the Wen clan. They are summarily slaughtered, and the Clan Leader of Jin creates a new title called Chief Cultivator, and names himself that title.
Wei Wuxian sees how they're treating the remaining Wen members - women, children, those who had nothing to do with the war - throwing them in mass graves, executing them, and secedes from his clan in order to protect them. This is an unpopular move, and he is essentially shunned from elite society.
Lan Wangji goes to see him in order to tell him the news that his sister Jiang Yanli is to marry Jin Zixuan, son of the current Jin leader. He discovers that Wei Wuxian has adopted one of the Wen children, Wen Yuan. He purchases gifts for Yuan and dinner for them both, and leaves.
Lan Wangji later insists to the other clan members on inviting Wei Wuxian to his nephew's one-month celebration, since he and the Wen members have done nothing bad in the past year and perhaps deserve forgiveness. However, Wei Wuxian and his General Wen Ning are intercepted by an ambush of some members of the Jin clan who think he is trouble and wish to kill him. Jin Zixuan comes to the rescue, but under the control of another, Wen Ning kills him by accident.
Wen Ning and his sister Wen Qing take responsibility for this, immobilize Wei Wuxian, and are killed. However, upon scattering the remains of the two siblings, the Jin clan suggest that all Wen clan members must be slaughtered and announce this at the Nightless City to the other clan members who have gathered for the event.
Wei Wuxian decides to fight all of them, though Jiang Yanli sacrifices herself to save him. In the aftermath of realizing that he's accidentally resulted in his sister's death, and that none of them would ever stop blaming him for their problems, he dives off of a cliff. Lan Wangji tries to pull him back up, but Jiang Cheng disturbs the cliff in anger and Wei Wuxian uses the opportunity to make Lan Wangji let go of him.
the death of wei wuxian and present day
Lan Wangji is distraught and escapes the Lan clan after they destroy the Burial Mounds where the Wens have been taking refuge. He manages to find Yuan, who has hidden away, and is the only surviving member. He brings Yuan back to the Lan sect and accepts his punishment for attacking other Lan members in order to try and stop the Wen massacre, which is 33 lashings and house arrest for three years. At some point, he gets drunk and brands himself with the same brand that Wei Wuxian accidentally incurred trying to save someone.
After three years, he immediately goes to the Nightless City in order to retrieve Wei Wuxian's remains, but find none. Eventually he goes home to return to his life training members of the Lan family.
Another thirteen years pass, and Wei Wuxian is resurrected into the sacrificial body of Mo Xuanyu, who wears a mask and is "institutionalized" in his home by his family. The Lans are helping the Mos with a task, and depart to Dafan mountain where a statue has come to life and has been eating souls. Wei Wuxian plays the flute to summon a demon, and to his surprise, summons Wen Ning, who is presumed dead for the last thirteen years. Lan Wangji eventually makes it to Dafan mountain and recognizes Wei Wuxian immediately. He offers to take "Mo Xuanyu" who is actually Wei Wuxian home with him to the Cloud Recesses as his guest.
The two of them hear of man-eating castles and go to investigate. Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian find Jin Ling, Wei Wuxian's nephew, immured in a wall. It turns out this is the burial ground of the Nie family, who have restless blades that thirst for blood even after their wielder has died.
Lan Wangji gets drunk one night with Wei Wuxian and goes to graffiti someone's wall, and steal their chickens, offering them to Wei Wuxian. This is a traditional gift from a groom to a bride, and Wei Wuxian refuses. When the two arrive to their hotel, they get in a fight with a gravedigger, who appears to be familiar with Lan Wangji's fighting style.
Eventually, Lan Wangji has to hide Wei Wuxian in the Cloud Recesses as people are starting to slowly cotton on that he's not Mo Xuanyu. While listening to Wei Wuxian plead his case, Lan Xichen realizes that the tune Wei Wuxian plays is incorrect. Wei Wuxian insists that it's the tune he heard, and they discover that the tune is forbidden magic.
After awhile, Wei Wuxian takes Lan Wangji home to Lotus Pier, where Wei Wuxian attempts to perform a ceremony of ancestral bows that are a tradition of marriage. They are intercepted by Jiang Cheng, who is angry at Wei Wuxian for daring to face his ancestors when he is directly the cause for several of their deaths. Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji start to leave, but there's a gathering at Lotus Pier.
Sisi and Bicao are there, and start an accusation that Jin Guangyao, current head of the Jin clan, had killed the previous Jin Patriarch and has also committed incest, causing his wife (sister) to commit suicide. The rest of the gathering are enraged at this. Leaving after the meeting, Jiang Cheng is angry at Wei Wuxian and stabs him. Wen Ning explains to Jiang Cheng that Wei Wuxian actually gave Jiang Cheng his own powers, and Wen Ning, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji depart on a boat.
Wei Wuxian asks Lan Wangji if he has any regrets, and Lan Wangji confesses that he regrets not having stood alongside Wei Wuxian at the battle at Nightless City. Now that people know Wei Wuxian is back and alive, he gives Lan Wangji an opportunity to cut ties and save his reputation, which Lan Wangji summarily refuses.
One night, Wei Wuxian and Wen Ning decide to go to the Guanyin temple, where they discover that strange things are happening. Jin Ling is also there meddling, and Wei Wuxian reveals himself to save Jin Ling from being shot by an archer. All of them are brought inside - it's a trap set by Jin Guangyao. Lan Wangji arrives but Jin Guangyao is about to garrote Wei Wuxian, so Lan Wangji seals his powers to save him.
Jin Guangyao takes Jin Ling as hostage when Jiang Cheng, alerted by Jin Ling's dog, barges in and starts to fight with Jin Guangyao. However, he is injured in the process. Jin Guangyao unearths Nie Mingjue's grave but is poisoned, and the restless blade comes to life. Eventually, it kills Jin Guangyao's second in command, and Jin Guangyao's arm is cut off. He reveals that he orchestrated many events that lead to the framing of Wei Wuxian.
Nie Huaisang warns Lan Xichen that Jin Guangyao might be moving behind him while his back is turned, and Lan Xichen stabs Jin Guangyao in a panic. He reawakens Nie Mingjue's blade to crush the building, and everyone leaves but Jin Guangyao, who dies.
Lan Wangji is named the new Chief Cultivator, and Wei Wuxian leaves to find his place in the world. Lan Wangji eventually wraps up his business at home, and joins Wei Wuxian on the road.

Not only is he an excellent guqin player, but in the series he composes this song.
As supplementary canon from the novels, he is also an excellent cook.

Asking the ancients about the worlds' madness? And who is there in the distance? Asking departed friends again Black and white, praise and blame, what is it all worth? Could you ever forget? In the Cloud Recesses, the promise we made And where are you now? That exchanged gaze, unforgotten Inheriting all the brilliance of the world In chaos, justice prevails Yet he refuses to forget Retracing the steps of bygone days Bichen’s blade rings loud Difficult to escape the madness of past grievances A qin sounds in the Quiet Room Playing Inquiry to empty echoes Are you still asking? Asking the ancients about the worlds' madness? And who is there in the distance? Asking departed friends again Black and white, praise and blame, what is it all worth? Could you ever forget? In the Cloud Recesses, the promise we made And where are you now? That exchanged gaze, unforgotten Are you still asking? No longer asking the ancients about the worlds' madness? And who is there in the distance? Departed friends incomprehensible Black and white, praise and blame, what is it all worth? Could you ever forget? Once all have dispersed I remember only you You are by my side Unharmed |

(instrumental) The title of the song literally translates too "gulls forgetting the machine," which is an idiom in itself, but includes the Daoist term which is Lan Wangji's namesake, meaning to let go of ones' worldly concerns. In the fable, a man is well-beloved and trusted by gulls and plays with them every day at the seaside. His father tells him to go fetch one, since it will be easy for him. He makes an attempt, and loses the trust of the gulls who no longer come near him.

Whatever feelings that Boya was trying to invoke, whatever scenery he was trying to illustrate, Ziqi would immediately understand. Boya is reported to have said they were of the same heart. When Ziqi died, Boya broke his qin and never took it up again.

Those who were late to their last life (brushed past), will have engraved in the palm (remembered in the next life) In your eyes an inky tear like water on smoke Buddha said (no ties, no ties), let go of persistence. (no phase, no desire) But how can I live my life not making waves? In thinking of you, I hate the transience of life, a prisoner to bitterness Emerald-new leaves remain, petals fall reflecting midstream When memories no longer suffice, we can laugh at our old vows. What should I ask for? What should I ask for? We plant 10,000 lotus flowers, Watch them sprout amongst all things living, and wait for 10,000 answers of the universe. Rosary beads fall to the sands of time, waiting for someone to interpret mercy in their readings.
