« CHARACTER INFORMATION »

    Character: Wangji Lan
    Canon: The Untamed
    Canon point: Post-Canon
    OU or AU?: AU
    Age: Mid-30s
    Species: Human

AU clarification: He has been in a previous jamjar with mystery elements where his primary goal was to fight creepy creatures and try and get home. His development has mainly been in creating relationships with people from other universes, and a separate version of his universe. He has also learned modern technologies, and experienced temporary emotional and physical enhancements from various events.

On his journey to figuring out the inner-workings of his last jamjar, he caught the attention of one of the NPCs who tried to turn his best friend and fiance at the time against him. That NPC threatened his life, and later, helped them escape from a fight. He works under the assumption that most NPCs are cagey and hiding something. He also mourned the deaths and worried over injuries of castmates only to find that they weren't permanent, though he attributes this healing to one of the NPCs and won't assume this is true at Noctium.

His most important development is getting married to his childhood crush and back-from-the-dead soulmate. The relationship started at a mismatched canon point in which they were enemies from a technical standpoint, and has evolved into a very solid relationship. At one point they were able to have a family unit with canon family members and their unofficially-adopted castmate.

    Disposition:
    • Obedient/Filial.
Lan Wangji spends most of his canon struggling in figuring out whether to obey his clan's copious rules, or to obey what he believes is the right thing to do. Though in the end the latter wins out, he does still do his best to be an exemplary clan member, and reminds people to follow the rules. He places a lot of trust in and feels obligated to his family. When he eventually fights his sect members (explanation in "Loyalty" section), his uncle doles out the punishment and is disappointed as he thinks this is uncharacteristically disobedient of Lan Wangji.

    • Cold/Aloof.
He is, as his future husband once complained, a "relentless, unreasonable and rigid fuddy-duddy." He remains cool and collected in most circumstances, unshakable. He shows his emotions mainly in microexpressions, and generally gives off a standoffish and unapproachable air. He is known for speaking tersely, and being generally unreadable to any but his older brother.

According to his older brother, he has been withdrawn ever since his mother's death. It should also be noted that he is only ever depicted smiling at his husband and his adopted child.

    • Dignified/Honorable.
Lan Wangji is the picture of a perfect classical Chinese gentleman. He is scholarly, well-to-do, fights well, and plays the guqin (an ancient instrument). He has an excellent memory and never forgets promises, and is well-known amongst the other characters as being pragmatic and respectable above all else. He is so well-respected that, when he breaks away to support the protagonist (who is seen as a traitor), the other characters quickly accuse the protagonist of having manipulated Lan Wangji, instead of Lan Wangji having betrayed them.

Whenever punished, Lan Wangji refuses to argue for a lesser sentence for himself, and takes on his punishments wordlessly, without complaint, and with his back straight and head high. He does this even if the situation is out of his control, or if he is under extreme mental and physical duress.

    • Loyal.
On the whole, Lans are a ride-or-die kind of clan. Even though he tried to side with Wei Wuxian shortly before his death, he had regrets afterwards that he didn't do enough. He fought his own clan members and accepted consequential punishment in order to rescue the remaining refugees who were under Wei Wuxian's protection. Towards the end of the canon, Lan Wangji essentially stakes his entire reputation in order to fight alongside the now-resurrected Wei Wuxian. He is loyal foremost to his husband, and then to his brother and his sect. He would give his reputation, his life and his honor for these things.

    • Passionate.
Underneath the aloof and distant air of Lan Wangji is an extremely passionate and loving man. He often shows his affections through gifts (alcohol, meals, toys) and acts of service (mainly acting as a bodyguard or willingness to bend the rules, but there are several other examples that exist in other adaptations of this canon.) This can sometimes drive him to do illogical things, such as wait outside for his monthly visits with his mother after her death. He also never stops mourning over Wei Wuxian despite not knowing he will be revived, even sixteen years later. Even though we don't see him during this timeskip, the lyrics in his character song suggest that he continually attempts to commune with the dead in order to ask questions of Wei Wuxian's ghost. His passion can also be harmful and destructive: feeling Wei Wuxian's death is his fault, he turns briefly to depression, alcoholism, and self-harm.

Under pressure: Lan Wangji does extremely well under pressure. He sometimes puts on an angry or concentrated face, but very few times does he lose his control over himself. In zero circumstances in canon during battle does he lose his calm. After the Wen clan burn down his home and kill his father, he is essentially kidnapped by them into an indoctrination program. He spends that time mostly acting unbothered, and even marches with everyone else on his broken leg, and later fights, without complaint.

He is often quiet and under-spoken, he doesn't panic and he doesn't mince words.

The times when he does become emotional + break control are when Wei Wuxian is in danger or being threatened.

    Condition upon arrival: Perfectly healthy.

Abilities: Cultivation is a system for spiritual guidance, health, martial arts, and in a fictional context, related magic. Its magic is mostly tied to something each user has, called a golden core.

His clan specializes in several special techniques involving an instrument known as a guqin.

    • Guqin Abilities

-Inquiry involves communicating with spirits of the deceased.

-Chord Assassination allows the user to turn the sonic resonance of the guqin into blades.

-Vanquish is used in exorcism to quell restless spirits, and

-Rest allows for the calming of energies and spirits.

Not only is he an excellent guqin player, but in the series he composes this song.

    • Spells His sect is known for their silencing spell, and the other spells that he is shown to be able to make with talismans are mainly related to defense, barriers, soundproofing an area, starting fires, and sending short messages. Spells can be invented by characters in canon, though Lan Wangji does not seem interested in inventing any himself.

    • Martial Arts/Swordsmanship He is well-regarded as one of the best fighters of his generation, with a high endurance for pain. He has (like his castmates) a superhuman ability to jump very high and float in the air.

    • Spiritual Power Spiritual power, aka qi is responsible for spell work, being able to pull one's sword which is unique to the user, and can be used to heal. Lan Wangji is able to transfer qi via touch. Qi can also be added to a hand-to-hand attack to increase damage.

    • Sword Flying For some reason, swords work like broomsticks to witches but you stand on them like a surfboard.

    • Intelligence Lan Wangji is extremely well-educated and spends a lot of his time puzzling out mysteries in canon. He is shown to be resourceful and adaptive.

    • Calligraphy Lan Wangji has beautiful, impeccable handwriting.

    • Cooking This is borrowed canon from the novel, but he's an excellent cook.
