I am angry, that's...

[He ran his fingers slowly through his hair. Of course he was angry. He'd been used, and the people he cared about most had paid the price. And while Lan Wangji said it was justified, he'd still been scared of what that anger would do to Wei Wuxian. It left his emotions in turmoil and confusion, and he couldn't help second-guessing his own reactions. What did any of it matter now? Here, where there was no way of knowing if they'd ever make it home again? All he could really do was... try to sort things out and see if he could make any sense of it at all.

He shook his head a moment later, rubbing at his eyes.]

But... No, I asked... It's not your fault.

[It was a dilemma he'd had before, many times. Trying to decide what was right and just, and sometimes all he could do was wait and hope he'd made the right decision. And if he couldn't believe anything else, he had to believe that Lan Zhan wouldn't have made this decision if he thought it would hurt anyone. It stung, to be left in the dark, but he couldn't yell about trust and not invest his own in the only person who'd ever tried to do the same for him.

He owed the truth, even if it was hard to say.]

More than that, I'm just... scared.

[What if he can't reconcile this? What if he's not able to grow and forgive and change? What if he never has the same experiences that made Lan Wangji see value in him in the first place? He doesn't want to fall back down into that dark place, he knows already what revenge can cost, would he really let himself become that again?]

[It was something he hadn't admitted, mostly because it made him feel small and vulnerable and utterly incapable. Having Lan Wangji tell him that that of all things was alright though? It's enough for him to look up, scanning Lan Zhan's eyes for a moment before they flick away, knees drawn up near his chest protectively.

He'd heard this before, refused it before, too caught up in shouldering everything on his own. But he'd learned since then, hadn't he? Maybe not a lot, but even so, wouldn't making the same decisions just end with more people getting hurt? That was probably exactly the reason Lan Wangji had been so concerned. Logically, of course that made sense, but logic felt hard to come by, was he even thinking clearly? He couldn't deny how desperately he wanted to take the hand offered, to take the decision from his hands. All that stood in the way was pride and he'd seen over and over the downfall such a thing was.

Almost as bad was the feeling that he'd let Lan Wangji down in some way. This wasn't rule-breaking and sneaking in after curfew, this was... Well, whatever other version of himself that had handled this all without anger or lingering resentment, he wished he could share those same experiences, and be the person Lan Zhan was missing.

He nods once, slow and deliberate, glancing down at the outstretched hand. He takes it in both of his, thumbs moving slowly over his open palm.]

[Lan Zhan wouldn't lie, it was a fact as immutable as the 3000 rules of his sect. If he said he believed, Wei Wuxian could be certain it was true, even if he'd callously thrown that in his face just moments ago. Hearing it again made his stomach twist, and already Lan Zhan was the one asking to make it up to him.

He shakes his head.]

I let you down...

[He rubs a hand over his eyes again, clearing away any remnants of tear tracks.]

Shouldn't I be the one saying that?
sadflutenoises: (for me?)

[personal profile] sadflutenoises 2020-07-11 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
[He still felt uncertain, but Lan Zhan's touch was grounding, something to focus on that wasn't his thoughts racing and second-guessing every action since he'd first met Meng Yao in their youth.]

Even if... if I decided I did want to hurt the people responsible?

[He lets himself be embraced this time, doesn't fight it, and rests his forehead weakly on Lan Zhan's shoulder. His anger had burned so hot once, but revenge didn't always satisfy. He was still left raw and hurting for what he and those he loved had lost. And even if he did kill Meng Yao here, would it change what had already happened?

He sighs, still not looking up, his words slightly muffled against Lan Zhan's shoulder.]

I won't... I mean, not here.

[He shakes his head minutely. Who knew what waited for them when they returned to their own worlds, after all.]
sadflutenoises: (the plot thickens)

[personal profile] sadflutenoises 2020-07-11 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
[Did he? If it hadn't happened to him, it would've been someone else. He hated the hierarchies and their inability to have a frank conversation. Talking around things and twisting words, sacrificing those that got in their way. Just a series of corrupt acts masquerading as good and right.]

Mm.

[Hearing about Su She only earns a sniff of derision.]

So he's mastered running away. I'll just master better traps.

[He was sure there were a number of spells and talisman that could work against teleportation, or restrict it, at least. And if not, he knew what he'd be studying in the near future. ]

[That was the trouble, wasn't it? Not knowing how long they were going to be here. How long it would take them to make it back. And even if they did, who knew how their own times might be affected? Were the days passing the same back home, without them there to see it? There was no way to be sure of anything.]

Mm.

[It made some sort of sense, that both Zewu Jun and his brother would try to fix such broken people.]

Is that what you're trying to do too?

[He lets out a slow breath.]

I don't know if I'll ever become the Wei Wuxian you come to care for.

[personal profile] sadflutenoises 2020-07-12 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
[That was unexpected. He'd thought Lan Wangji might hesitantly admit that he'd hoped to help change him, or steer him toward the end he wished for. If that wasn't his goal, if he wasn't waiting to push him to become the Wei Wuxian he knew, then...

He startle a little at the revelation, lifting his head just enough to study Lan Wangji's eyes. Not that he expected to see anything but truth there, but he had to confirm it, even so.]

That long? Even before...?

[Even when he'd been such a anger-driven mess? When he'd been destroying himself slowly from the inside out. Even then? He knew better than to think Lan Zhan hated him back then, but hadn't he been so troublesome? He'd been certain there was no one that mourned the Yiling Laozu back then.]

[He'd asked himself again and again if there had been another way. He never wished to regret, but he'd found that didn't always go hand-in-hand with upholding his sense of justice. He didn't regret doing what he felt was right, but he regretted the things that followed; being cut off from his family, disowned, missing those moments he'd promised them, missing the life he'd thought he'd wanted. But he'd known that was impossible, long before the Wens. He'd given everything he could for the Jiang family, right down to his core, and if that was the trade to make them whole, he'd thought it well worth it, even if his other promises and dreams went unfulfilled.

It was human, to still want them, to mourn what could have been. He wasn't perfect, far from it, he'd snapped at those around him, when things got bad, in his weaker moments even little A-Yuan, who deserved none of his ire. Over things as silly as a few lotus sprouts. A final, snapping thread on the frayed rope that had been his mind then.

He lets out a breath then, and lets himself be held, allows himself that small measure of comfort. The embrace he returns is weak and more than a little shaky. He wishes he'd known then, wishes he'd acted on that improbable urge to ask Lan Zhan to stay. Maybe part of him had known then, that he would have said yes, and that was exactly why he'd kept it as only his own quiet wish.]

We're... okay, right? Lan Zhan... I want you to stay, okay? I don't want to go back to a time where you're not with me.

[He had struggled before, feeling like he was shattering apart, with nothing to catch all the pieces. He knew what it was like to fall apart. He was still new to being held together. He'd always worried that caring too much for someone else would take away his freedom, like a halter around his neck, but instead it felt like coming home. A place where he was warm and wanted and whole.]

It's with you.

[He hugs Lan Zhan all the tighter, tucking his head under his chin.]

[Whether for good or ill, he doesn't notice Lan Zhan's single tear, though with how red his own eyes have been over the course of the day, he can hardly point fingers. He's just content, for the moment, to stay here. For once, he doesn't mind the silence, and doesn't try to fill it with chatter or idle talk.

When Lan Zhan asks if he wants to leave, he can't think of a single reason to stay. Lan Zhan's room has become as welcome to him as any other home he's had, and infinitely more pleasant than his own darkened chambers. He nods, pulling back slightly, taking hold of his hand, rather than his waist, and twining their fingers together with a soft squeeze.]
