IN CHARACTER
HISTORY.
Lan Wangji had kind of a sad childhood where his mother was unwelcome by the rest of his family and she and his father lived in seclusion. She died when he was young, though every month of his childhood he waited outside her door.

At the beginning of the story chronologically, Wei Wuxian and siblings have come to the Cloud Recesses to be instructed by the Lan family. They've lost their invitations, so they're refused at the door, but Lan Wangji lets them in later. After that, Wei Wuxian works tirelessly to try and become Lan Wangji's friend, even though it's perceived by others that Lan Wangji detests him.

After a particularly exciting adventure, the students celebrate with drinking, but is again caught by Lan Wangji. Wei Wuxian casts a spell and forces him to drink, at which point he gets drunk and wakes up late the next morning. Due to his breaking the rules, he accepts the punishment given to the other boys who broke curfew.

One day, the Wen clan decide to request family members from each clan come to them for training. It turns out that they wish to weaken all the other clans. They come to the Cloud Recesses and burn it down entirely. Lan Wangji's father is in critical condition and his brother is now missing.

During a mission, the Wen trap a bunch of the clan members in a cave with a monster called the Slaughter Tortoise. Everyone escapes, but Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji stay behind as bait. They remain in the cave for a week awaiting rescue, and kill the tortoise but cave in the exit.

Once the clan members report back, there's a campaign against the Wen clan. There is a battle, and the Wens lose.

Wei Wuxian sees how they're treating the remaining Wen members and secedes from his clan in order to protect them. This is an unpopular move, and he is essentially shunned from elite society.

Lan Wangji goes to see him in order to tell him the news that his sister is to marry Jin Zixuan, son of the current Jin leader. He discovers that Wei Wuxian has adopted one of the Wen children, Yuan. A year later, Lan Wangji later insists to the other clan members on inviting Wei Wuxian to his nephew's one-month celebration. However, Wei Wuxian and his General Wen Ning are intercepted by an ambush of some members of the Jin clan who think he is trouble and wish to kill him. Jin Zixuan comes to the rescue, but is killed in crossfire.

Wen Ning and his sister take responsibility thinking that the other clans will leave the remaining Wens and Wei Wuxian alone, and are killed. However, the clans announce their intention to eradicate the remaining Wens. Wei Wuxian decides to fight all of them, though Jiang Yanli sacrifices herself to save him. Distraught, Wei Wuxian dives off of a cliff. Lan Wangji tries to pull him back up, but fails.

Lan Wangji is distraught and escapes the Lan clan after they destroy the Burial Mounds where the Wens have been taking refuge. He manages to find Yuan, who has hidden away, and is the only surviving member. He brings Yuan back to the Lan sect and accepts his punishment, which is 33 lashings and house arrest for three years.

Another sixteen years pass, and Wei Wuxian is resurrected into the sacrificial body of Mo Xuanyu, who wears a mask and is "institutionalized" in his home by his family. The Lans are helping the Mos with a task, and depart to Dafan mountain where a statue has come to life and has been eating souls. They help, and Lan Wangji takes Wei Wuxian back home with him.

Lan Wangji continues to help Wei Wuxian on his personal journey as he feels guilty for not being there for him earlier, and the two run into a series of events that reveal the exact method and reason for why Wei Wuxian and Wen Ning were set up for the murder of Jin Zixuan and the resulting catastrophe.

A fight results as it is revealed to the remaining characters of the story that Wei Wuxian wasn't evil all along. Eventually, the guy behind it all is killed.

Lan Wangji is named the new Chief Cultivator, and Wei Wuxian leaves to find his place in the world. Lan Wangji eventually wraps up his business at home, and joins Wei Wuxian on the road.

PERSONALITY.
In his youth, Lan Wangji had always been a stickler for the rules. Even though he was compelled by another into breaking curfew, he took the punishment as if he was at fault. Through much internal conflict, he now abides by his morals and view of justice.

Lan Wangji has always been studious. As a result of this and his erudite upbringing and prestigious education, he has a high level of intellect. Additionally, he is observant, and has a good understanding of inter-clan politics.

Most regard Lan Wangji's demeanor as cold. He speaks tersely, often in fragments, getting his point across bluntly and efficiently. He sometimes doesn't speak at all, only responding with a look of acknowledgment. He spends most of his studies rebuffing Wei Wuxian's attempts at friendship at every turn. He does not often invite people into his personal space, and he also does not often count someone as a friend. He only has very minute smiles, and only does so once in a blue moon.

Lan Wangji has a reputation for his poise, his good manners, and his ability to always stay calm under duress. He does not often show his emotions on his face, but he also rarely shows pain as well. The other clan members are surprised at his usual pragmatism and respectability when he chooses to take Wei Wuxian's side. He is idolized by his juniors as a good role model, and he has been accused of always acting too perfect.

Stubborn and headstrong, once Lan Wangji makes up his mind, there is little to do to dissuade him. He is not one to ask for help, though he often lends a hand when his services are needed.

Honestly, the Lans that we hear about are for the most part, extremely loyal and forgiving of those they decide worth their loyalty. Lan Wangji is no exception, and often guards and assists Wei Wuxian at the cost of his reputation. His brother, Xichen, understands this plight and offers Wei Wuxian sanctuary in their home. Xichen requests this same understanding in the fallout of Jin Guangyao's confessions, and Lan Wangji grants it to him.

Lan Wangji is a man of his word. He has an excellent memory, and he neither forgets nor breaks promises. He stops Wei Wuxian on his path, but is reminded that they made a pact where Wei Wuxian promised to live a life full of justices. Unable to ignore this, he steps aside to let his friend go, though he is reprimanded for doing so.

It is rare for Lan Wangji to doubt himself. When he does, he does so quite dramatically. Other than those occasions that regard the events that lead to Wei Wuxian's death, he doesn't falter, and he finds himself on sure footing. He is easily embarrassed but not easily shamed.

When Lan Wangji loves, he loves deeply. He often shows his affections through gifts and acts of service. His passions can take a dark turn however, as evident with his only regrets in life involve not standing up more for Wei Wuxian. In the aftermath of his death, Lan Wangji accepts the consequences, but also seeks self-harm to punish himself for his failings.

Many people consider Lan Wangji to be aloof, but underneath his air of diplomatic apathy, he shows care for those around him. He wants to help people and he always wants to do the right thing. When he finds that the only remaining survivor of the Wen massacres is a little boy, he takes him in and raises him essentially as his own.

ABILITIES
STRENGTHS.
Cultivation is a system for spiritual guidance, health, martial arts, and in a fictional context, related magic. Its magic is mostly tied to something each user has, called a golden core.Lan Wangji has always been a talented cultivator, and his family is renowned for its teachings. His swordsmanship, reflexes, pain endurance, and physical strength are well-regarded even among the elite. He is eventually titled Chief Cultivator.

His clan specializes in several cultivation techniques that are not employed by the other clans. They mainly involve the use of a guqin (instrument) and the interpretation of the musical language that derives from a guqin.

Inquiry involves communicating with spirits of the deceased. Chord Assassination allows the user to turn the sonic resonance of the guqin into blades. Vanquish is used in exorcism to quell restless spirits, and Rest allows for the calming of energies and spirits.

Additionally, his sect is known for their silencing spell, which can be cast at anyone who is then physically unable to speak for the length of a burning stick of incense. Breaking of the spell renders the victim physical damage to their mouth and throat.

Not only is he an excellent guqin player, but in the series he composes this song.

He is also good at cooking, has neat handwriting, is usually viewed as scholarly and intelligent, and somehow manages to always be immaculately clean.

This one's really just a joke but whenever he makes an entrance, time slows and the slow strum of a guqin ushers him in. The camera pans up to show flowing clothes, and windswept hair.

WEAKNESSES.
He has a repressed personality and oftentimes comes off as cold without meaning to do so. He has a hard time expressing his emotions, and honestly only really his brother ever truly understands his thoughts and motivations. This can lead to misunderstandings and miscommunications.

Lan Wangji has a strong moral compass, so when he perceives his own failings, especially when it relates to grief, he tends to be very self-destructive.

Lan Wangji cannot handle alcohol. His tolerance is less than one drink.

His biggest weakness, probably according to everybody else in his canon, is Wei Wuxian. Post-resurrection, he would basically move heaven and earth for the bae, and it gets him in hot water with some of the other characters.
